Energy Efficiency program — effective diagnosis and implementation
Optimizing boiler systems
Apply today for one or more subsidies to increase the efficiency of boilers producing steam or hot water from natural gas. With more efficient boilers, you’ll get more heat, consume less natural gas, and ultimately emit less greenhouse gas*. Savings for you, and benefits for the planet!
The four measures for optimizing boiler systems
The four measures for optimizing steam or water boilers systems eligible for the grant are:
- Installing an economizer (steam boilers only)
- Installing a micromodulation system
- Installation of an O2 probe
- Installing thermal insulation on equipment, accessories and pipes.
More than one measure can be combined in a single grant request1.
Grants – Optimizing boiler systems
Receive up to $340,000 in grants per boiler2
Installing an economizer
Installation of a micromodulation system
Install a combustion oxygen trim
Installation of thermal insulation
Installing thermal insulation on equipment and accessories
A grant may be provided for installing an economizer on a new or existing steam boiler. It can be installed on the stack or directly integrated into the boiler.
The economizer recovers heat from hot fumes vented into the atmosphere, increasing the efficiency of the boiler by 85% or more.
Grants of $30 to $300 per boiler BHP :
- 75% of eligible costs
- maximum of $150,000 for an integrated economizer and of $300,000 for a non-integrated economizer

A grant may be provided to equip an existing hot water or steam boiler with a micromodulation system.
The micromodulation system allows for advanced control of combustion performance by adjusting the air/fuel ratio in the burner.
Grants of $30,000 per boiler and up to 75% of eligible costs.

Installing a combustion oxygen trim probe to an existing hot water or steam boiler with a micromodulation system may be eligible for a grant.
Adding a combustion oxygen trim probe to a micromodulation system adjusts the ratio of air to fuel in the burner, taking into account variations in boiler conditions (pressure, temperature, humidity, etc.). The probe will enhance the micro-modulation system.
Grants of $10,000 per boiler and up to 75% of eligible costs.

For pipe insulation
Grant between 12 to $31 $/pi of insulated pipes (The amount depends on the nominal diameter, the length of the insulated section, and the type of boiler.)

For installing thermal insulation on equipment and accessories (valves, tanks, etc.) to reduce heat loss.
Grants of $30 to $2,200 per unit (The amount depends on the type of equipment/fixture being insulated.)
- 75% of eligible costs
- Maximum $100,000/year
