New Natural Gas Connections in the Building Sector:
RNG Purchase Requirement Expected to Resume October 1
The requirement to purchase renewable natural gas (RNG) for new connections to the natural gas distribution network in the residential, commercial and institutional sectors is currently expected to resume on October 1, 2026, following a Superior Court ruling issued last May that reinstated the Régie de l’énergie’s original decision.
New customers subject to the requirement will be able to choose between a dual-energy solution combining electricity and RNG or the purchase of 100% RNG. Both options are accessible and competitive compared with other renewable energy sources for a range of building types.
*Please note that the effective date may be subject to a decision by the Régie de l’énergie, which is expected by the end of September.
