Towards carbon neutrality for buildings – Énergir gets the green light to deploy a 100% renewable energy supply for any new connection to its network

Montréal, January 30, 2024 - Énergir welcomes the Régie de l’énergie du Québec’s decision to approve its initiative requiring that all new network connection are powered by 100% renewable energy, effective April 2024. This initiative will apply to all residential, commercial and institutional buildings that want to connect to Énergir’s network for the first time.

The Régie’s decision is one more step towards decarbonizing Énergir’s grid and the energy footprint of its customers. What’s more, it will contribute to decarbonizing building heating and to Québec’s GHG reduction targets. One of Énergir’s objectives is to achieve carbon neutrality in the buildings it serves by 2040 and in the energy it distributes by 2050.

“Énergir has reached an important milestone. We have accelerated the pace by literally transforming our business model, leveraging our 2030–2050 Vision to become a leader in decarbonization. Today, we are putting our money where our mouth is by implementing an initiative that demonstrates not only our serious commitment to meeting GHG reduction targets in the building sector, but also to our role in Québec’s energy transition. Énergir is the first natural gas distribution company in Canada to introduce a 100% renewable energy offer and I am very proud of that,” said Stéphanie Trudeau, Executive Vice-President, Québec at Énergir.

For Énergir, this is definitely the right strategy to slow the growth of fossil natural gas consumption in the building sector and halt the addition of new GHG emissions. As of April, all new residential, commercial and institutional connections to Énergir’s network must sign up for the dual-energy RNG/electricity or RNG option. Both solutions are accessible and economical for many building types.

Reducing fossil natural gas volumes in favour of renewable energy

As stated in its Vision 2030–2050, Énergir believes that its natural gas network has reached maturity. It plans to significantly reduce the volume of fossil natural gas and make the residual volume it distributes progressively renewable.
To achieve this, Énergir offers several energy solutions to support customers in the transition to renewable energy. It begins with a focus on energy efficiency solutions to help customers reduce their energy consumption and electrification of off-peak winter heating through dual energy, then looks to RNG for the remaining portion of the energy supply.
