Thanks to solar preheating, Accueil Bonneau has reduced its energy bill to invest more in supporting those in need

For Accueil Bonneau, which accompanies inclusively people at risk or in a situation of homelessness towards lodging, greater independence and fulfillment, every energy dollar saved is a dollar that can be invested in its mission to fight homelessness. That is why the refurbishment of the day centre’s solar thermal system, as well as Énergir’s subsidies to facilitate this work, contributed concretely to improving the quality of the services provided by this non-profit–and reduced its environmental footprint at the same time.

Located on de la Commune Street in Old Montreal, the building that houses the Accueil Bonneau day centre was equipped in 2011 with solar panels designed to preheat the water used by the organization–particularly for dishes and the preparation of meals that the organization distributes every day to more than 400 people. However, due to its age and the breakage of certain components, this system had not been used for several years.

Grants in action

The engineering firm BPA was commissioned to conduct an energy efficiency study to return the solar heating system to service and voluntarily managed the application for financial assistance submitted to Énergir to cover the costs of this study. Under the studies and implementation component of its energy efficiency program, Énergir awarded nearly $20,000 in financial assistance to Accueil Bonneau, thanks to the Supplement for low income households, in addition to other grants for repairs to the system , for a total of more than $45,000.

Decrease spending, improve services

Through this work, completed by Kinu Energy in 2023, the solar heating system now meets about 50 percent of the day centre’s hot water needs. This saves more than 2,500 m3 of natural gas and prevents emissions of nearly five tonnes of GHGs annually–all with free, renewable energy. “The study funded by Énergir has allowed us to improve the operation of our building, but also to save money as the work progresses,” said Fiona Crossling, General Director of Accueil Bonneau.

“Having the solar heating panels working reduces not only our energy costs but also our environmental footprint. This kind of grant allows us to look ahead and plan ways to improve our services,” added Ms. Crossling.
