$70 million in financial assistance to support renewable natural gas (RNG) production in Québec

Sainte-Sophie-de-Lévrard, July 7, 2020 - Énergir welcomes the granting of $70 million in financial assistance to support renewable natural gas (RNG) production in Québec announced today by the Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Jonatan Julien.
Of this amount, $45 million will be used to develop eight RNG production projects that Énergir can then distribute through its gas network. A growing proportion of Énergir’s customers want to green their energy consumption, and RNG consumption contributes directly to this goal. These eight projects will add value to organic materials from the agricultural, industrial and engineered landfill sectors in several regions of Quebec.
"This financial assistance provides concrete support for RNG production projects in Québec and will help accelerate the development of such projects. Renewable natural gas is a clean, local energy that helps combat greenhouse gases (GHGs) and provides economic benefits wherever projects are developed. These projects are perfectly in line with the economic recovery launched by the Government of Québec," said Stéphanie Trudeau, Énergir's Executive Vice President, Québec.
In March 2019, the government enacted a regulation setting the minimum quantity of RNG to be delivered by natural gas distributors at 1% in 2020, and 5% in 2025.
To reduce the environmental footprint of the natural gas it distributes, Énergir is actively promoting the RNG sector as a way of offering a competitive renewable energy solution to customers seeking to reduce their environmental footprint. At the same time, it is working to increase the savings generated by its energy efficiency programs, which allow customers to lower their consumption.
