Connecting your building to the gas network

If you want to connect a building to our gas network, here’s what you need to know, along with the connection steps.

Project planification

When planning a connection project, you should allow approximately six to eight weeks between signing the contract with Énergir and being able to use natural gas appliances. This timeframe may vary if the connection requires an extension of the network.

Costs that may apply to your project:

  • Basic connection fees of $300, based on the expected consumption, to which an additional amount may be added if an extension of the gas network is required.
  • An additional contribution may be required based on the expected consumption.
  • Depending on your profile, a deposit may also be required.

Good to know : Several incentive programs for new construction projects may apply to your project. Before beginning construction, speak with one of our experts to identify eligible solutions and maximize your return on investment.

Steps for connecting your building

Has access to the gas network been confirmed? Here is an overview of the steps required to connect your building to the gas network.

1

Choosing a heating contractor

2

Énergir connects your building

3

The contractor installs your applicances

4

Énergir inspects the installations and opens the meter

Once access to the gas network is confirmed, we will then recommend one or more Énergir Partners to whom we will transfer your request. You will also receive their contact information should you wish to reach them at your convenience. These independent contractors are subject to strict quality control by Énergir.

They will schedule an appointment with you to assess your needs and provide you with a quote. They will also be able to indicate the indoor space required, depending on the appliances proposed. Consult our guide for analyzing quotes. It will help you prepare your project and ask the right questions.

Once you have chosen your contractor, you will also need to sign a service contract with Énergir for the distribution of renewable natural gas, which will launch the connection work.

One of our technicians will examine your property and collect the information needed to obtain the required permit, determine the site for the meter and plan the work. Depending on the by-laws of your municipality, the meter may be placed either inside or outside your building. Our technician will e-mail you a sketch showing where the meter will be installed before the work begins.

Once your building is connected to the gas network, the contractor installs the interior piping system and your new appliances, then conducts safety tests. The work schedule must be agreed upon with the Énergir Partner. The duration of the process varies depending on the appliances selected and the current installations in your building.

An Énergir technician will then open the meter and ensure that the new installations are safe and comply with standards. The contractor will then light the appliances and explain how they work. You can then start using your natural gas appliances.
